In a significant milestone for Amazon’s air logistics network, the e-commerce giant’s largest cargo jet, an Amazon Prime Air A330 freighter, has commenced operations.

Operated by Hawaiian Airlines, the Airbus A330-300 freighter has completed three round trips during its inaugural week in service.

It’s been shuttling between the national hub at Cincinnati-to-Northern Kentucky International and San Bernardino International Airport in California, according to data from the tracking site Flightradar24.

Amazon beefing up

In its strategic move toward enhancing its air fleet, Amazon has chosen Hawaiian Airlines to operate the new A330-300 freighter. The company plans to lease nine more used aircraft once overhauled into container cargo configurations, with most deliveries scheduled for the following year.

San Bernardino is strategic as it houses the e-commerce giant’s new West Coast regional hub. The plane was stationed there temporarily, allowing new crew and ground personnel to familiarize themselves with the aircraft.

Meet the A330 cargo jet

The company’s decision to deploy the A330s in its domestic network is part of its strategy to replace aging 767-200 freighters as their leases expire.

These 767s are operated by ABX Air, Air Transport International, owned by Air Transport Services Group, and Atlas Air.

Compared to the 767 family of aircraft, the A330 offers about 20% more volume and is more fuel-efficient. It boasts nearly as much capacity as a Boeing 777, making it a valuable addition to Amazon’s expanding fleet.

The company relies on its air logistics network to fulfill its one- and two-day delivery promises for eligible Prime members.

Hawai’s role

Hawaiian Airlines’ expertise in operating A330 passenger aircraft was crucial in securing the Amazon flying contract.

To support the Amazon cargo operation, Hawaiian Airlines plans to hire approximately 160 new pilots and will also handle routine maintenance for the A330 aircraft.

While Amazon’s flight activity has slowed this year following the normalization of e-commerce sales after the pandemic-era boom, the company’s modest growth contrasts with the flight cutbacks observed at significant carriers like FedEx and UPS. Additionally, Amazon Air recently announced the discontinuation of its operations at Leipzig/Halle airport in Germany, marking another strategic move in its global air network.

With over 100 aircraft in its fleet, Amazon continues strengthening its position in the global logistics landscape.

Expansion in Australia

Amazon has expanded its presence in Australia by unveiling a new logistics site in Geelong West, marking its 12th facility in the country and its first venture into regional Victoria.

Introducing the new parcel hub also aligns with the company’s strategy to enhance delivery efficiency by establishing infrastructure closer to customers’ residences. The company’s flexible delivery driver program, Amazon Flex, allows individuals to work according to their vehicle schedules, offering earning opportunities through package deliveries.

The move is set to increase employment in the region. It is also committed to investing in rural and outlying areas in Australia, with the potential to attract more customer support for the online retail giant.
