The CMA CGM Group is expanding its routes. Its air cargo division now has a Transatlantic service between Asia and North America.

Since 2022, CMA CGM Air Cargo has operated two Boeing 777-200Fs from its Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) hub, flying five times per week to Hong Kong and four times per week to Shanghai, connecting Europe with Greater China.

CMA CGM’s global expansion

Here are new router features for the service:

  • Strategic fleet expansion: The new B777-200F, operated by Atlas Air, strengthens CMA CGM AIR CARGO’s network along key global routes.
  • Major destinations: The aircraft connects major airports, including Hong Kong, Chicago, and Seoul.
  • Westbound operations: On the return leg, the plane flies from Chicago (ORD) to Hong Kong (HKG) via Seoul (ICN).

Increased capacity

A second B777-200F is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2024 and will be deployed on another transpacific route, linking mainland China to North America.

With these two Boeing aircraft in operation, CMA CGM Air Cargo will offer customers a total of seven weekly transpacific flights.

Next year, a third aircraft will join the fleet, further expanding its reach and increasing capacity for customers.

CMA CGM business developments

In June, the business added seven sailings with 7,000-TEU vessels from Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

In July, the company announced its acquisition of France’s third-largest media company, Altice Media.

Benefits of airfreight shipments

Grand View Research reports the air cargo freight logistics market is set for good growth in the next six years. It estimates the market growth will measure a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5%.

“The rise of e-commerce has significantly boosted the need for fast and reliable delivery services within countries. E-commerce giants and retailers rely heavily on air transport to meet the high expectations of their customers for rapid delivery,” reads the report.

Here are the benefits of transporting cargo airfreight:

  • Speed: Companies may need stock urgently and choose air freight as it’s a much faster option than ocean freight. The Red Sea crisis may force manufacturers and store owners to look to air freight to prevent a serious shortage in their production line or store shelves.
  • Reliability: Airlines run strict schedules. These schedules make it a reliable option for air freight cargo. Fresh produce is often flown via airfreight so items arrive fresh at a destination.
  • Efficiency: Shipping by air freight is a great time saver. A manufacturer may need an urgent part to complete a project. Placing the item as air cargo will allow the manufacturer to save time instead of waiting a few weeks for ocean freight to arrive in port.
