Western Australia’s supply chain has received a boost. Intermodal Group, a leading freight container logistics operator, has launched a new rail service operated by Watco Australia.
This service will connect North Quay at Fremantle Port to the Kenwick Intermodal Terminal, marking a significant step forward in expanding rail freight transport across Perth.
The Kenwick Intermodal Terminal (Kenwick IMT) is strategically linked to the nearby Roe Highway Logistics Park, offering easy access to key industrial areas like Canning Vale, Jandakot, and Kewdale. With RAV7 trucking access, it ensures smooth and efficient last-mile deliveries.
Software solutions for terminal operators
Intermodal Group (IMG) has teamed up with OneStop, a company that offers software solutions that assist port companies in improving productivity. It also integrates a client’s sea, port, and land operations. It services businesses such as shipping lines, port and terminal operators, customs brokers, trucking companies, and rail operators.
This partnership will bring OneStop’s advanced tools, OneStop Modal and Vehicle Booking System (VBS), to the new intermodal facility, improving efficiency, container handling, and traffic management.
Container movement in the supply chain
Adam Lebihan, vice-president of Intermodal at IMG says the opening of Kenwick IMT is a significant step forward in our mission to enhance Western Australia’s logistics infrastructure.
Lebihan adds that the partnership with OneStop underscores the commitment to adopting innovative technologies that improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
“This collaboration will not only boost our capacity but also provide substantial benefits to our customers, enabling smoother, more cost-effective container movements across the region,” says Lebihan.
Benefits of the terminal for logistics industry
- More service options: The increased TEU capacity will attract new shipping lines to IMG’s facilities, providing more choices for shippers and carriers.
- Lower costs for transport operators: Allowing empty containers to be returned to the same area they were picked up from will help transport operators save on costs and improve efficiency.
- Simplified container movements: Kenwick IMT will act as an inland port, with rail services moving containers to Fremantle port.
Chris Harnett, chief commercial officer at OneStop says: “Our OneStop Modal solution will not only streamline operations but also provide crucial visibility into intermodal container movements, ensuring enhanced efficiency and service reliability.”
