Australia’s largest general cargo and container port, the Port of Melbourne, has signed a long-term lease agreement with the Victorian Government to access additional land.

This strategic move aims to enhance the efficiency and resilience of Victoria’s supply chain, ensuring robust support for the region’s logistics and trade activities.

What’s the bigger picture? This initiative will help maintain the Port of Melbourne’s position as the main trade gateway for Southeastern Australia.

The changes will reduce congestion and lessen the impact on nearby communities, ensuring smooth operations and a better quality of life for residents.

Key features of the port development

Earlier this year, the Port of Melbourne successfully completed its Webb Dock East Extension project. Webb East is also Australia’s first fully automated container terminal.

Now, the new agreement sees the port lease nine hectares of the former Melbourne Markets site, extending to 2066, which aligns with its current 50-year port privatization lease.

This is the largest expansion of the port since the long-term lease was established in 2016. The Port of Melbourne plans to invest over $200 million in developing the site based on current plans.

Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon says that with container volumes expected to double by 2050, access to additional land at the former Melbourne Markets site will unlock opportunities critical to Victoria’s future needs.

Australian freight and logistics market

IMARC reports the freight and logistics market in Australia is experiencing dynamic growth. One major driver is the booming e-commerce sector, which has significantly increased the demand for efficient logistics to keep up with the rising needs of online shoppers.

At the same time, technological advancements have brought about a new level of efficiency, with innovations such as real-time tracking, automation, and data analytics improving supply chain operations.

Last month, DoorDash introduced drone delivery in several Melbourne suburbs, partnering with Wing to deliver food to customers faster and more conveniently.

Port of Melbourne at a glance

The Port of Melbourne is Australia’s largest capital city container and general cargo port, managing over one-third of the nation’s container trade.

Situated in the heart of Melbourne, surrounded by growing communities, key industrial areas, and major transport routes, the port operates 24/7, all year round.

With essential facilities and transport connections for all major trade types, the Port of Melbourne is an important freight hub for Australia. It serves areas including southern New South Wales, South Australia, and Tasmania.
