In a move toward sustainable transportation, Volvo Trucks has introduced its latest FL Electric model, equipped with second-generation battery technology, to an eager Australian market.

The international courier and logistics giant, DHL, received the first Australian-bound FL Electric with the upgraded 66kWh battery packs last week.

Upgraded battery packs

Volvo has been steadily enhancing the energy capacity of its battery packs for the FL and FE Electric medium-duty trucks. Starting from 50kWh, it’s progressed to 66kWh, and now, the latest battery packs boast an impressive 94kWh capacity.

The 94kWh battery packs are yet to reach the shores of Australia.

FL Electric’s new home

Situated at the DHL Supply Chain’s western Sydney supply chain campus, this new Volvo FL Electric vehicle has a robust 600V motor and four 66kWh battery packs, providing a total capacity of 264kWh.

The FL Electric features a two-speed transmission, can accommodate a substantial 5,500 kilogram payload, and offers an impressive electric range of approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles). This range should efficiently service DHL Supply Chain’s diverse clientele across the metropolitan area.

Its body can accommodate eight full-sized pallets and incorporates regenerative braking technology. This technology allows the van to recharge batteries when braking using a particular technology in the braking systems. It enables EVs to operate more efficiently, specifically in high-traffic and metropolitan areas.

A just transition

Steve Thompsett, the CEO of DHL Supply Chain, expresses the company’s commitment to transitioning its fleet to zero-emission vehicles, aligning with its broader efforts to reduce its carbon footprint across all operations.

“Updating our fleet to zero emissions vehicles is a priority in Australia, and it combines well with the measures we’re taking to reduce our carbon footprint across our operations. DHL has a strong understanding of the climate crisis and a head-start in reducing the environmental impact of its operations. Our company has already trialed and rolled out Volvo’s electric truck offerings in Europe, meaning that we could forgo an Australian trial and go straight to investing in these climate-benefitting vehicles,” says Thomson.

Bill Rolfe, senior vice president of Transport at DHL Supply Chain, underscores the company’s commitment to continuous improvement by introducing the Volvo FL Electric. “The addition of Volvo FL electric trucks is a simple way for us to transition to battery-electric technology, with a useful driving range, proven reliability, and an intuitive driving experience that will resonate with our staff,” Rolfe noted.

Gary Bone, vice president of Volvo Trucks, emphasizes the vehicle’s attributes. “As well as being nimble, safe, and a comfortable place for DHL Supply Chain staff to work, the Volvo FL delivers tangible benefits to the climate, as well as everybody who lives and works in the areas in which they operate,” he says.

This development signifies a significant step forward in Australia’s journey towards a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation system, as Volvo continues to play a pivotal role in driving the adoption of electric trucks in the region.
