In a much-anticipated event, Google has officially unveiled its newest line-up: the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Watch 2. Despite a flurry of leaks and teasers, the next generation brings many welcome features.

Meet the new Pixels

Boasting a 6.7-inch display and Google’s cutting-edge Tensor G3 chipset, the Pixel 8 Pro offers an impressive blend of power and performance. Its promise of seven years of operating system upgrades is an industry-first and a testament to Google’s commitment to longevity in technology. The Pro variant starts at $999.

Meanwhile, the standard phone introduces a slightly smaller 6.2-inch display. Yet, it packs a punch with the same Tensor G3 chipset. Starting at $699, it brings the latest Google tech to a broader range of consumers.

Accompanying the smartphones is the Pixel Watch 2. Priced at $349, this smartwatch incorporates design upgrades, including a new crown and updated sensor array. Moreover, it inherits the Fitbit Sense 2 features. Considering Google acquired Fitbit back in 2021, this is a welcome addition.

The software side

In tandem with the new devices, Google has rolled out Android 14, bringing forth many features tailored for personal and professional use.

Enterprise users, in particular, will appreciate the additional security options, including a six-digit PIN unlock and controls to block potentially insecure 2G connections. Additionally, Android 14 simplifies profile management, allowing seamless switching and tailored app preferences.

The Pixel 8 Pro introduces ‘Zoom Enhance’, a feature that adds details to photos upon zooming, reminiscent of sci-fi scenes where minute details reveal crucial information. Moreover, Assistant with Bard, leveraging generative AI, provides personalized assistance now.

Google’s focus extends beyond individual devices. Wi-Fi 7, a cutting-edge wireless technology, is introduced, albeit initially limited to select regions, including the US, Canada, UK, EU, and Australia.

Availability

Pre-orders for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have officially begun, starting at $699 and $999, respectively. If you pre-order the Pixel 8 Pro, Google generously throws in a Pixel Watch 2 for free – this offer is valid until October 11, 2023, and only while supplies last.

The devices will be available through official Google retail partners in selected regions from October 12, 2023. This is also when those who pre-ordered can expect delivery of their Pixels according to current estimations. Those situated in rural areas may experience delivery delays.

Considering the trouble Apple is facing with iPhone 15 Pro Max delivery delays in major markets, Google should bolster its supply chains and stock availability to avoid similar wait times.

The Pixel 8 series and Pixel Watch 2 undoubtedly mark a significant leap forward in smartphones and wearables.
