FedEx just leveled up its delivery game. The logistics giant has opened a new high-tech sorting facility at the Memphis World Hub.
The LEED-certified building is ready just in time for the holiday rush. Covering 1.3 million square feet across four floors, it has 11 miles of conveyor belts, a section for handling large packages, and can sort 56,000 packages every hour.
FedEx is speeding up deliveries
The facility can handle over half of the main sorting volume, allowing for faster sorting and quicker transport of packages to their final destinations.
Here’s how the new FedEx hub enhances efficiency with smart technology:
- Fully automated efficiency: The facility’s automation reduces sorting time, boosts reliability, and ensures sorting can continue smoothly even in bad weather.
- Advanced scanning technology: Six-sided scanners capture size and barcode details from all sides, enabling precise sorting.
- Precision weighing and measuring: New systems accurately weigh and measure packages, ensuring smooth processing.
- Constant package monitoring: Equipped with 1,000 cameras, the facility monitors package flow to maintain efficient movement throughout.
Allow customers to compete the smartest logistics network
Lisa Lisson, president of air operations at FedEx says the Memphis World Hub is the heart of the FedEx global network.
Lisson adds that this dynamic, new sort facility is equipped with the latest data-driven technology that enables the business to strengthen its hub operations.
“Modernizing the Memphis World Hub is a key step in our network transformation to help our customers compete and win with the world’s most flexible, efficient, and smartest logistics network,” says Lisson.
The FedEx World Hub is the largest sorting facility in the company’s network. Covering 940 acres, it employs 13,000 team members, has 171 aircraft gates, and operates 84 miles of conveyor belts.
This massive hub can process up to 484,000 packages every hour.
