Uncle Frog’s branded mushroom gummies have been recalled in Australia after at least five customers were hospitalized after consuming the product.

The health department urges consumers who have purchased the product to dispose of it safely. It should also be sealed before throwing it away to avoid children or pets accidentally consuming the product. The authorities have confirmed that a South Australian teenage boy was found unresponsive after consuming several gummies.

Oz Brands Pty Ltd urges consumers to return Uncle Frog’s Mushroom Gummies and Lions Mane. Since the recall, Uncle Frog’s website has been offline.

According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand, consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice. The food hazard alert specifies that the gummies contain “unapproved novel ingredients (lion’s mane, cordyceps)” that may cause “adverse symptoms” if consumed.

CEO’s apology

The sole director of Uncle Frog’s, Rohan Bandil, has told The Guardian in an exclusive interview that it was not the intention to have customers hallucinating and risk their health, resulting in the recall.

The gummies have resulted in customers experiencing dizziness and involuntary twitching.

One of Bandil’s companies was deregistered earlier this month. He told The Guardian he was “sorry this happened.”

Recalling products process

All food sold in Australia must comply with the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. “Australians expect that the products they buy are safe and that suppliers will protect consumers,” reads the standards code.

When a product is potentially unsafe, the supplier must remove the risk from the public as quickly as possible.

This would include the following steps:

  • Removing the product from the shelves.
  • Removing the online advertisement of the product.
  • Publicly declaring the recall of the product.
  • Offering to repair, replace, or refund the product.

According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand, it’s the supplier’s responsibility to recall the product, no matter where in the supply chain.
