Asendia’s latest e-commerce market watch 2024 shows Australia’s e-commerce market is booming, and the market is taking sustainability to heart. In this article series, Locate2u brings you part one – findings for the Australian and UK market.

Asendia offers a range of international e-commerce and mail delivery services. The company services fashion, apparel, health and beauty, marketplaces, and food and supplements. Key destinations for e-tailers include Asia, Europe, the USA, and Canada.

What’s causing the boom? CEO of Asendia Australia, Lou Milicevic, emphasizes the strong adoption of online shopping among Australians. She notes that Australian consumers’ confidence in online shopping solutions makes the country a highly attractive e-commerce market.

In 2022, 82% of Australian households made online purchases. Additionally, Australia leads the world in the uptake of ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) services and sees a growing adoption of PayPal for online transactions.

Key insights for the Australian market:

  • 75% of respondents agree or strongly agree that retailers should prioritize ecological sustainability.
  • 60% expect free delivery or seasonal discounts.
  • 35% of shoppers use coupons and discounts to discover new products.

Australian online consumers are purchasing online for the best prices, looking to save time, and shopping for delivery at home.

UK’s exciting e-commerce market

As per the report, Australia’s e-commerce market shows steady growth’ despite economic challenges. Thomas Sjolin, CEO of Asendia Nordics says this region’s market is an exciting one.

Sjolin highlights that many UK businesses have adopted hybrid working patterns, and people working from home are boosting e-commerce growth. As a result, online shopping rates in the UK are at 81.5%, well above the European average of 64% and the global average of 49%.

Post-Brexit effect

Reflecting on post-Brexit activities, Sjoin notes that after leaving the European Union, the UK is exploring new markets and plans to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership. This opens free trade with Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and New Zealand.

What’s the bigger picture for the UK? The UK remains Europe’s largest e-commerce market, and with the right logistics partner, businesses can still distribute and expand across the UK effectively, as if it were still in the EU.

The report emphasizes UK consumers are global leaders in online shopping due to widespread internet access, a strong desire to find the best deals, and a reliable postal network.

Key insights for the UK market:

  • 94% of UK orders are successfully delivered on the first attempt.
  • 43% of online transactions are made by card.
  • 88% of shoppers use PayPal
