The export market in Tasmania is about to receive a boost. The runway is currently undergoing an upgrade, which will allow Hobart International Airport to handle long-distance freight and wide-body international flights.
This will enable direct flights to Asia for the first time and boost its role as Australia’s Antarctic gateway.
This week, the project reached a significant milestone as work began on expanding the runway.
Freight opportunities for Tasmania
Federal Member for Franklin Julie Collins says the upgrade will unlock more freight opportunities for Tasmania.
She adds that Tasmania is already known for some of the best seafood, fresh produce, meats, dairy, and wines. “This means a huge boost for the local agriculture industry,” says Collins.
Tasmania’s main exports include:
- Processed metals and metal products
- Ores and concentrates
- Meat products
- Seafood products
- Dairy products

Logistics operations in Australia
Earlier this month, FedEx Australia unveiled a new facility aimed to boost the local economy and help small and medium-sized businesses expand both domestically and internationally.
Located close to the highway, it offers convenient access for express pick-up and delivery services in Coffs Harbor and nearby areas. These areas include Grafton to the north and Eungai Creek to the south.
The new facility covers over 2,400 square meters and is equipped with advanced technology that can safely and efficiently sort up to 1,300 packages per hour.
On the delivery service front, Australia Post and IKEA have teamed up for a three-year partnership to expand IKEA’s delivery services across Australia.
Australia Post will now handle about 65% of IKEA Australia’s small and medium parcel deliveries, becoming their primary e-commerce fulfillment partner. The partnership commences next month.
