Daimler Truck, in collaboration with its Japanese subsidiary, Mitsubishi Fuso Bus, and Truck, has officially delivered the initial batch of approximately 900 Fuso Next Generation eCanter electric trucks to the Japanese delivery company Yamoto Transport.

The eCanter, a two-ton electric marvel, represents the latest addition to its family of electric trucks. Fuso introduced Japan’s first mass-produced, locally carbon-emission-free light-duty truck back in 2017.

Bolstering its emissions-free fleet

Yamoto Transport is no stranger to Fuso, having previously incorporated 25 units of the first-generation eCanter into their fleet in 2017. Now, they’ve acquired around 900 units of the new eCanter, marking this the most substantial single order for the eCanter.

It is a testament to the ever-growing embrace and impressive performance of electric commercial vehicles globally.

Karl Deppen, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation, agrees: “FUSO’s eCanter reduces the burden on drivers by offering them safe, low-vibration driving without emissions. This was highly evaluated by Yamato Transport, who previously introduced 25 of the first-generation eCanter back in 2017. We are honored to support Yamato Transport in their continuing efforts to go carbon neutral as they deploy our EV trucks throughout Japan.”

Fuso prides itself on taking customer feedback and developing new products based on that feedback. “Over the last five years, several customers in markets all over the world used the FUSO eCanter in their businesses and provided comprehensive feedback based on their real-life experiences. FUSO used this customer feedback during the development of the Next Generation eCanter,” a press release details.

Going green

As a part of its ambitious sustainability drive, the delivery company plans to attain a remarkable 48% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to 2020 levels, with the ultimate goal of achieving virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The transaction between Yamoto Transport and Daimler Truck includes a unique aspect – utilizing a Fuso Green Lease.

This lease agreement encompasses more than just the vehicles themselves; it incorporates a finely tailored eMobility ecosystem, complete with vehicle maintenance services and specialized warranties, underlining Daimler Truck’s commitment to a sustainable and comprehensive approach to electric mobility.

The Fuso Green Lease, explicitly designed for the new eCanter, is provided by Daimler Truck Financial Services Asia as part of its global growth strategy.

Meet the eCanter

The FUSO eCanter, falls within the category of electric light commercial vehicles. It boasts a substantial gross vehicle weight of 7.49 tons and an impressive payload capacity of 4.5 tons.

Equipped with six high-performance lithium-ion battery packs on board, each with a capacity of 370V/13.5kWh, the eCanter delivers a range of approximately 100 km (62 miles) per charge. The eCanter can be charged via two battery charging system options: the standard AC charging method or the expedited DC charging, which aligns with the CCS2 protocol.

It’s important to note that these trucks can be specified according to the company’s needs; hence, a few different power and size variations exist.
